How do you fire a piece with a lid?

After a lot of checking, adjusting and double-checking, you are absolutely certain: the lid of your piece is just the right shape and size. It fits like a glove! But now your piece still has to dry. And then it has to go into the kiln! You worry because what if your pot and lid don’t shrink evenly?

It’s happened to every ceramicist before: that lid that fit like a glove doesn’t fit the pot after firing. What a shame! But what can you actually do to avoid this?
